The History and Significance of the Pledge of Allegiance

Few American traditions are as recognizable as placing your hand over your heart and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance while facing the American flag. For more than a century, the pledge has served as a symbol of unity, patriotism, and a shared commitment to the ideals upon which the United States was founded.

The Pledge of Allegiance was first written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy as part of a nationwide celebration marking the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the Americas. It was intended to inspire patriotism among schoolchildren and encourage respect for the American flag.

The original pledge has undergone a few changes over the years. The most notable occurred in 1954, when Congress officially added the words “under God.” Today, the pledge concludes with the familiar phrase:
“…one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

The pledge is more than a recitation of words—it represents the principles that have guided our nation through generations: freedom, unity, equality, and hope. It reminds us that while Americans may come from many different backgrounds, we are united by the ideals embodied in our flag.
