Washing and repairing your American Flag is not a violation of US Flag Code. Although repairing your flag shortens the flag, it is acceptable to shorten the flag until the overall fly dimension is at least twice the width of the star field/union.
Flags are made of a material that will eventually tatter and/or sustain wear and tear from many types of weather conditions. If you catch the start of any tattering and/or wear on your flag on the fly end early, you can extend the life of your flag significantly. The trick is to have your flag repaired at the first signs of wear and tear on the fly end. If you wait too long, the flag will be unrepairable.
